Al Perez was one of the Thirteen Artists Awardees of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) in 1976 and later served as a member of the AAP Board of Directors in the early 1990s.

Painstakingly done, Al Perez's early works were truly unique. Details have been assiduously depicted, piece by piece, inch by inch.

Al Perez's barrio scenes portray the typical Filipino ways and activities in an early morning setting. He captured realistically the modest yet happy lifestyle of the rural folks with livestock wandering in the dusty surroundings; indeed, his perseverance is genuinely astounding.
